What the Arnold Palmer Invitational Taught Us About Upcoming PGA Tour Events

The Arnold Palmer Invitational is an early event on the PGA Tour in the United States. The 2022 edition was played between the 3rd and 6th of March and contested at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Florida.

Scottie Scheffler was the man who came out on top and in doing so moved up to No 5 in the Official World Golf Rankings. It was the second PGA Tour title for the American and in terms of his career the Arnold Palmer Invitational shows Scheffler is moving in the right direction. Scheffler is only 25 years old at the time of writing and has a lengthy career ahead of himself. Having won the WM Phoenix Open in February, landing the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a month later highlights the quality and good form of Scheffler. He will be disappointed to have finished T55 at the 2022 Players Championship, but it was a tough tournament for many golfers due to the changing weather conditions. Speaking after the victory at Bay Hill, Scheffler said, “It feels great, especially to win on such a difficult golf course and the way it finished,” before continuing, “I didn’t play my best stuff, I just kept grinding and made some key putts down the stretch, and it was really just a fight all day.”

So, one thing the Arnold Palmer Invitational taught us about upcoming PGA Tour events is Scheffler means business this season. He won the tournament without being at his best and that is ominous for the other players on the PGA Tour. Indeed, you may want to back Scheffler to win his first major title this season and looking at betting site reviews can help you choose which sportsbook you want to use for your golf betting.

You must go back to 2018 to find the last time Rory McIlroy won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and he has claimed six PGA Tour titles since. However, things did not go according to plan in the final round of the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational as McIlroy carded a four-over-par 76 to finish T13 for the tournament. Speaking after his final round, the Northern Irishman said, “Like I’m playing good. I’m hitting good shots. I’m swinging the club well. I’m chipping well. I’m putting well. But it can knock your confidence whenever the conditions are like this. I just need a day off tomorrow to forget about what’s happened this week and then just sort of focus on next week.”

McIlroy won two PGA Tour titles in 2021 but the fact he commented on his good play at the Arnold Palmer Invitational shows he believes in his game. There was frustration at the end of the final round, but this could be the year McIlroy gets back to his best.

Viktor Hovland is a young Norwegian golfer who plays on the PGA Tour, and he played well at the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational. In fact, he was tied for the lead heading into the 17th hole and a birdie on the last hole would have been enough to catch Scheffler. Seven of the top 10 players on the final leaderboard were 30 years of age or younger and that could be something to look out for on the PGA Tour for the remainder of the season. Cameron Smith, age 28, won the 2022 Players Championship and it could be tough this season for the more experienced players to compete with the younger guys on the PGA Tour.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational is just one of many PGA Tour events this year, but it has provided us with an early indicator of what could happen this season.
