LEBANON — The annual fundraiser for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center known as the Prouty will include both in-person and virtual events this year, the cancer center’s friends group announced.

The summer event, which in normal years brings crowds to the Upper Valley, combines cycling, walking and other activities to raise funds and awareness for research and patient and family support services at the cancer center.

This year’s event aims to offer a return to some normal after last year when it was held only in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Prouty has always been about hope, and this year’s hybrid model is a stepping stone to a return to normalcy from the pandemic,” said Jaclynn Rodriguez, executive director for the Friends of NCCC, in a Wednesday news release.

In-person events are scheduled to take place over the course of three days, with golf at Eastman Golf Links in Grantham on Friday, July 9; a 20-mile cycle beginning at Dewey Field Lot in Hanover on Saturday, July 10; and a 5K walk at Dewey Field Lot on Sunday, July 11.

The virtual event will run from June 1 to July 10, or 40 days to mark the Prouty’s 40th year. It began in 1982 when four NCCC nurses, inspired by their patient, Audrey Prouty, cycled 100 miles through the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Sign-ups for in-person participation will be open to pre-registered participants first, as space will be limited. Designated start times will be assigned to small groups, and no large gatherings will take place this year.

Registration is open online at www.theprouty.org.
