A GOLFER connected to the Cheshire Cat competition has been honoured with a place in the county’s Hall of Fame.

David Peel was the instigator and first winner of the Cheshire Cat, a world amateur golf ranking event that comprises the Stockport Salver and the Wilmslow Crow.

But that’s just a part of Peel’s quite remarkable record and level of commitment to Cheshire Golf that is very unlikely to be eclipsed.

He moved from Lancashire to Cheshire when his father, Mike, became the professional at Stockport Golf Club and established himself as a fine player at an early age and was soon playing off scratch.

David won selection for Cheshire in 1996 and had a rather handy foursome partner in Jamie Donaldson!

He quickly established himself as a consistent and reliable team member and helped the Cheshire team win the Northern Counties League in 1998.

He reached the milestone of 100 county caps in 2007 playing against Cheshire ladies and went on to rack up appearances for the county.

He became team captain in 2011 and in leading his team to league success he won every singles match that year and then set his sights on eclipsing Roy Smethurst’s seemingly impregnable record of 186 caps.

He achieved this in 2017 and went on to total 192 caps by the end of the year at which point he said a fond farewell to inter-county golf.

Outside of his team duties, David has had a great record in his own right and won the county championship in 2004 when edging out Paul Waring at Delamere Forest.

He was part of the Stockport team who won the team championship in 2000 alongside Rodney Gorton and Nick Welton.

David won the Birkdale Goblet in 2002 and in 2004 he was the semi-finalist in the British Mid-Amateur Championship and won the prestigious Gerald Micklem Open at Sunningdale in 2011.

No doubt there are more honours to come from the Stockport Golf Club star in the coming years.
