In a statement sent to the press, the organisation of Portugal Masters and Open de Portugal said that the events are going to take place without spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fans that have already purchased their tickets for Portugal Masters at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course “will be directly contacted with more information about the refund process.”
“The European Tour returned to action in July with two dual-ranking events in Austria, followed by a new six-week ‘UK Swing’”, a strategy used to plan events in regional clusters where it is possible.
Ben Cowen, the European Tour’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, expressed his delight in returning to Portugal, however, he said that “it is important that we remain diligent in minimising risk within the tournament ‘bubble’ at each of our events.” Furthermore, the events will continue but “behind closed doors, and will not be in a position to welcome spectators to the Portugal Masters or Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos.”
Miguel Franco de Sousa, the president of Portuguese Golf Federation, underlined the number of golf events Portugal is about to receive in September, highlighting the positive impact on the tourism sector.
