Links Golf Club’s junior section raised £5,200 in their annual charity day last week in aid of Newmarket Open Door, a charity providing homeless and vulnerable young people with supported housing and training opportunities in Newmarket.

The main event was a Texas Scramble competition played in teams of three comprising a man, a woman and a junior.

The winning team, with a superb net score of 56.7, was David Lowrie, Maureen Howes and Jake Plumb. The runners-up were Dale Cole, Ro Robinson and George Whitehall with a net 60.3.

In addition to the entry fees from the competition, a variety of lots donated by club members and others was sold by silent auction, and individual holes were sponsored by a range of local businesses raising a total of approximately £5,200 for the charity.

Links Golf Club junior vice-captain and organiser, Theo Morris, said: “I’m really grateful to everybody who contributed to the day, whether as players, sponsors or donors. To raise this much money for such a worthwhile cause is a fantastic result, I couldn’t be more pleased.”

The junior section at the club is also celebrating multiple successes on the wider stage with four players in the top ten of the final British Junior Golf Tour 2020 Open Gross Order of Merit.

Harry O’Shea (second), Tyler Weaver (sixth), Theo Morris (eighth) and Max Weaver (tenth). Theo Morris and fellow Links member Jake Plumb have also been selected for the U16s East Midlands Regional Golf Squad.

Men’s captain Mike Panes said: “We are really proud of our Junior section who are really putting the Links Golf Club on the map with a strong series of performances in both team and individual competitions. The whole club is rightly proud of their achievements.”

Links Golf Club is located in Newmarket, Suffolk.
