Southland team named
Southland has named a strong five-man team to contest the national interprovincial, being played at Whitford Park Golf Club in Auckland later this month.
The team will be spearheaded by Matt Tautari, who brought up his 100th game for Southland at last year’s nationals and recently won the Otago Matchplay title. He’ll be joined by Tyler McLean, Liam Hewitt, Rob Mainland and Liam Balneaves. Doug Carmichael will be reserve and manager.
Southland will be buoyed by its excellent team performance to win the South Island Interprovincial recently.
The national tournament will be played from November 24 to 28.
Southland’s men’s masters golf team has been competing at the national Freyberg Masters at Hamilton Golf Club this week. The team includes Simon Hollyer, Peter Buckley, Doug Carmichael, Glen Sutherland and Simon Boland with Ngarimu Paraki as reserve/manager.
The team opened the tournament on Monday with a half with Taranaki, and a loss to Manawatu-Wanganui. On Tuesday the team had a great 3-2 win over Auckland, and then a half with Northland.
The tournament continues throughout the week and results can be viewed at golf.co.nz or check out the Golf Southland Facebook page for daily updates.
Longford takes Eastern Zone win
Golf Southland’s popular primary school zone tournaments got underway last week with the Eastern Zone tournament played at Mataura.
The Longford 4 team of Taylor Waide, Hunter Waide, Addison Knapp and Will Carson came out with the win, over second placed Gore Main 1 (Cooper Petterson, Eli Puna, Sophie Winkle and Narisha Honeyman). Third place went to Longford 2 (Johnny Galog, Riley Wilson, Rithvy Grounder and Madison Harper).
The zone tournaments continue throughout this month, before the overall final is played at Drummond.
Greenacres Tournament this Sunday
Greenacres Country Club is holding a fundraising tournament on Sunday (November 8) and is encouraging people to get involved for a fun day and a good cause – raising funds for the Southland Charity Hospital.
The unique tournament is a Mulligan Stableford, where players must replay one shot per hole. The entry fee is by Arkwright Prize (minimum value of $10 – recycle a golf prize you don’t want), and a $15 donation to the Southland Charity Hospital.
Tee off is at 11.30am and all enquiries can be made directly to the club.
NZ Mixed Foursomes
Southland golfers Dayna Kaio and Paul White won the Division 4 Plate at the New Zealand Mixed Foursomes Championship, played at Waitemata Golf Club recently.
