Neangar Park Golf Club is preparing to showcase its course to the country’s best PGA Australia tour professionals at its annual pro-am. The tournament is normally held in early January but has been pushed back to March for 2021. A few months ago it looked as if golf competitions of this scale faced an uncertain future, so to now have a mid-March date on the cards has put a buzz in the air at Neangar. “Our pro-am is a huge event and we love hosting it,” Neangar Park club manager Joe Sinnott said. “There’s nothing better than watching high calibre professionals in action on our course.” In previous years hometown heroes Lucas Herbert, Andrew Martin, Kris Mueck in addition to fellow Victorians Adam Burdett and Ryan Lynch have been in action at the Pro-Am. “Each year we receive great feedback from the visiting players on how good our course is compared to other regional layouts across Victoria and the rest of Australia,” Sinnott said. “These guys play some of the best courses across around the country so we are quite proud of the positive feedback.” Previous winners of the tournament include Martin, David Branson, Lindsay Wilson and most recently Burdett. A brilliant six-under 65 fired in-form Victorian Burdett to victory in the 2020 Pro-Am, achieved 24 hours after finishing equal runner-up at the Axedale Pro-Am. Burdett sank eight birdies in the Evolution Copy Print Solutions-backed tournament to win by one shot from West Australian Rick Kulacz. Lynch won in 2019, Martin secured victory on his home track in 2018, Wilson found success in 2017, while Branson triumphed back-to-back in 2015-16. While the 18-hole layout hasn’t changed much since the professionals were in town earlier this year, a difference for the 2021 event will be access the club’s soon to be opened driving range. The new practice fairway is significantly longer than the existing and will allow players to practice hitting clubs 200 metres plus before commencing their rounds. Also in the works is the new pitch & putt course that features nine short game holes for players to test themselves. “We think you’ll be impressed by the work that our staff have done,” Neangar Park said to its members. “These new facilities will not only benefit you, our members, but will also assist in growing the game of golf across the region by providing a fun, affordable and quick introduction to our game. “The pitch & putt course is expected to be open around April or May, however, we are hoping to have some holes ready to play around the time of our pro-am in March.” Neangar Park has just wrapped up a few busy weeks on the course with the conclusion of several events including club championships, the annual tournament and other gold letter events.
