Plans have been lodged for an expansion of the golf course and new facilities at a luxury hotel in North Yorkshire.

Aldwark Manor Golf Hotel and Spa, supported by ID Planning, has submitted an application to Harrogate Borough Council for the redevelopment of an existing building and an area of former agricultural land.

Planning permission is sought for the conversion of the land to form new golf course holes and the redevelopment of the building to create a clubhouse.

The proposed clubhouse would comprise a reception area, kitchen and dining area for use by golfers including, with an ancillary bar, a meeting room, changing rooms, toilet facilities, and golf shop. On the first a second meeting room and 13 twin en-suite hotel bedrooms would be created.

The proposed development would enable the retention of existing jobs and support the creation of 12 new roles.

The proposed clubhouse building was most recently in use by the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) but is now vacant following its relocation.

A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The golfing element of the hotel requires upgrading with the recent vacancy of the former BIGGA building providing opportunity for re-development into a modern and fit for purpose clubhouse with ancillary food and drink service, golf shop and hotel accommodation / meeting rooms for hotel guests.

“The hotel is a key local employer and the proposed development would support retention of existing jobs whilst expansion would provide further employment opportunities, which is a significant materially positive factor of the proposals especially during the current Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Aldwark Manor is set in 120 acres of countryside and can accommodate more than 100 residential guests, as well as offering conference and banqueting facilities for up to 240 people.

Depho Estates purchased the hotel, which dates back to 1865, from London-based real estate investment company Aprirose in 2019.

A planning application is currently under consideration for improved spa and leisure facilities, including three pools, gym and studios, treatment rooms, therapy rooms, indoor relaxation rooms, outdoor terraces, conference facilities, 27 bedroom suites and associated auxiliary areas.
