Portugal now accounts for 86 more deaths related to Covid-19 and 3,134 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the Directorate General for Health (DGS).
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 5,278 deaths and 335,207 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, and today 70,381 are active, 1,800 fewer than on Wednesday.
Regarding hospital admissions, the DGS epidemiological bulletin reveals that 3,304 people are admitted, 28 less than the previous day, 509 of them in intensive care, plus five.
Health authorities have 75,633 contacts under surveillance, 772 fewer than on Wednesday, the figures show, with 4,848 more patients recovered.
Since the beginning of the epidemic in Portugal in March, 259,548 people have recovered.
Of the 86 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, 37 occurred in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 32 in the North region, 14 in the Centre region, two in Alentejo and one in the Algarve.
According to the DGS bulletin, the North region has the highest number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the last 24 hours (1,371), totalling 175,983 cases and 2,537 deaths since March.
In the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo 964 new cases have been reported, with 109,017 cases of infection and 1,831 deaths so far.
In the Centro region there have been 444 more cases of Covid-19, a total of 34,571, and 697 deaths since March.
In Alentejo, a further 267 cases have been reported, totalling 7,420 cases and 136 deaths since the epidemic began in Portugal.
The Algarve region has today reported 63 new cases, totalling 5,949 cases and 56 deaths.
In the Autonomous Region of the Azores 19 new cases have been registered in the last 24 hours, totalling 1,254 detected infections and 19 dead since the beginning of the pandemic.
Madeira has registered six new cases. Since March, the autonomous region accounts for 1,013 infections and two deaths.
The confirmed cases are spread over all age groups, with the highest number of infections being recorded between 20 and 59 years old.
The new coronavirus has already infected at least 150,745 men and 184,329 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, 133 cases of unknown sex are under investigation as these data are provided automatically.
Of the total number of fatalities, 2,775 were men and 2,503 women.
The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in people over 80 years of age.
The country is in a state of emergency from 9 November to 23 December, during which time there is a curfew in the municipalities with the highest risk of contagion.
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,570,398 deaths as a result of more than 68.8 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
