Callaway Chrome Soft With Triple Track Review

32

Callaway’s Chrome Soft for 2020 was engineered to deliver a fast and receptive feel, but the most intriguing development for many observers was the introduction of Triple Track Technology on the golf ball, which has been added to encourage better alignment, something carefully explored by Golfshake’s Equipment Expert Ryan Rastall in his series of new Triple Track Tips, including Putting Alignment.

However, we wanted to test this concept in the hands of regular golfers, so we tasked Golfshake Ambassadors Mel Davies and Rob Treanor with trying the Chrome Soft With Triple Track throughout the summer. Having played regularly and using up their supply, the guys have shared their feedback, describing what impact the new ball has made to their games.

Feel

Mel: “I’m not normally a lover of the softer type balls but I have to say these have won me over. They feel great off the face on tee shots and full iron shots.”

Rob: “Having played last year’s version of Chrome Soft, I knew this would be a good golf ball. The 2020 model performed in line with my high expectations, with a smooth contact feeling and sound which belies the fact that it doesn’t compromise on distance.

“Whilst feel is associated with the sensation of club and ball through impact, there are also emotional qualities. Finding a particular brand and model of golf ball can be very satisfying and for as long as I can remember the most prized treasure to find on the course has been a Pro V1. Finding a Chrome Soft in the rough is now a similar event, a true smile bringer!”

Performance

Mel: “These have performed as I would expect from a premium ball. Very good and consistent ball flights, they stop well on approach shots and also get some check on shorter chips and pitches. I haven’t seen a jump on distance off the tee but at the same time I haven’t seen a drop off.

“Around the greens, the last time I tried the Chrome Soft balls I really struggled. To me it felt like the ball was ‘exploding’ off the face and shooting past my intended target. This time round they seem much more impressive and I get a consistent launch and roll out (which could also be down to my improved short game).

“I’ve absolutely loved these for putting. I have an Odyssey Triple Track putter and the balls line up perfectly. They feel better off the putter and I love watching the lines as the ball rolls on my intended target. If I miss it’s down to the stroke or the read, there can be no excuse with your alignment using these. I’ve also noticed my putts per round has dropped since testing commenced.”

Rob: “The graphene centre has a proven pedigree for distance whilst the multi layered cover results in a sweet sensation when chipping and around the green.

“The needle really moves when the Triple Track alignment aid is put into use. When putting, the extra width this system offers over a conventional single line helps to inspire much greater confidence on the path to the hole. Undoubtedly this allows for greater accuracy and confidence when lining putts up.

“I also watched a video of Golfshake’s resident equipment expert Ryan Rastall who had been experimenting with using the alignment aid for tee shots. Using the lines on the ball it is possible to ensure better alignment with the body to target or to encourage a desired swing path for a specific shot shape.”

Conclusion

Mel: “I’m very impressed and a little surprised at how good these balls have been. I was sceptical about what results I would have from them but all round they haven’t fallen short of where I believe a premium Callaway ball should be.

“One thing I have liked since I started to do it is lining the ball up on tee shots. I tee the ball up with the lines aiming at my intended start line and I believe that has helped my game. One real positive is I shot my lowest gross score the other week and because of that I was cut to my lowest ever handicap so that’s a big thumbs up for helping me achieve that.”

Rob: “The Triple Track alignment system genuinely does change the game, ensuring this already impressive ball has a seat alongside the top tier of balls on the market. Given the effect on putting statistics, I am sure other manufacturers will be hot on the tails of this performance improving innovation.

“Since converting to play the Chrome Soft this season, I have noticed a different mindset when putting. The path between ball and hole is clearer to visualise and looks wider which has helped to lower my scores by a handful of shots each round. Judging by the increased numbers of these balls in play, it looks as though a lot of other golfers are also taking advance of these benefits.”
