The 2021 European Tour schedule will take place entirely in the calendar year, beginning and ending in the UAE, incorporating 42 events across 25 countries.
There will be no fewer than 10 events held in Great Britain and Ireland, starting with the British Masters – hosted by Danny Willett at The Belfry in May – before a seven-event swing across July and August that includes the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish Opens, as well as the delayed 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s. The BMW PGA Championship and Dunhill Links will then take place in September.
Also announced is the ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland, a five-day tournament tri-sanctioned by the European, LPGA, and Ladies European Tours, with a field of 288 players – 144 men and 144 women – and a $2.35 million purse split evenly. American Golf have also been announced as the tournament’s “official retail partner”.
The tournament will count towards the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and carry Team Europe Ryder Cup points, while the women’s tournament will count towards the Race to the CME Globe for women on the LPGA Tour, the Race to Costa del Sol on the Ladies European Tour, and Solheim Cup points for both Team Europe and Team USA.
There will be four Rolex Series events in 2021 – the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Scottish Open, BMW PGA Championship, and DP World Tour Championship. The first three will each now have a prize fund of $8 million and carry 8,000 Race to Dubai points, the same as on offer at the four World Golf Championship events, while the season finale in Dubai will have a $9 million purse as well as the largest winner’s cheque in golf at £3 million.
The European Tour also confirmed how the Ryder Cup scoring process will work, with all Race to Dubai and OWGR points counting as 1.5 Ryder Cup points from January 1 to May 9 and two Ryder Cup points from May 12 to September 12. All points previously earned in 2019 and 2020 will still count.
